about

me

̌̌̌

Hi. I’m Mike.

I am a Yellowknife based adventure documentary filmmaker, photographer and 3D visual artist who specializes in emotive storytelling. I am currently based in the Canadian north, in Yellowknife, NT and working around the world.

Origins

The name tencolours came about from the Japanese proverb ‘Ju-nin-to-iro’,
十人十色, which literally translates to ‘ten people, ten colours’. Its meaning signifies that everyone has their own story, their own unique perspective. The journey of tencolours is emotive storytelling through real human connection – to share the beauty of people, the world and adventure – telling stories that are unwashed, but not dirty.

tencolours was originally born and operated in Tokyo, and as you may have guessed, was called ‘tencolors Tokyo’. It was born out of a combination of good fortune, good friends and perfect timing. When I later decided to move back to Canada, I began tencolours Canada and here we are today. [tencolors Tokyo currently still operates out of Tokyo, Japan and is the sister business to tencolours Canada]

Inspirations

For me, filmmaking is a byproduct of all the interactions I’ve had with people throughout my life, sharing stories, experiences and adventures together. The inspiration, motivation and accumulation of shared stories has always left me feeling like they needed to be shared further, for them to act as their own inspiration for others. Naturally, I’m driven to stories of perseverance, stories with grit and putting one foot in front of the other.

Storytime

Over the years, I’ve had the amazing opportunity to work on some really interesting projects. I’ve had the incredible privilege to meet so many amazing and inspiring people along the way, all of which have impacted my life for the better.

For many of the projects I have worked on, I strive to incorporate a lot of movement into the process of getting the shots. For those really interesting projects (some of which are long term ongoing projects) I especially love being right in the action when filming. For me, this often means running or cycling with the camera so as to be right there while things are happening. Personally, I find these types of shots to be so much more interesting and meaningful for my style of work.

I’ve cycled through the busy streets of Tokyo, Japan, on a bike, with a custom camera rig strapped to my chest, while following a group of cyclists as they weaved in and out of traffic. I’ve done the same on the country roads of Tuscany, Italy while filming cyclists who were participating in a vintage cycling race. I’ve had the (cold) luxury of both running and cycling while filming on an ice road in -35 degree Celsius weather, whilst trying not to slip and fall with all my equipment. On the other end of the temperature spectrum, I’ve chased an ultra distance runner around Hong Kong in +40 Celsius degree weather while the runner attempted to run 600 km in 6 days. Coincidentally, the crazier the activity, the crazier the shots, the more interested I am in the project.

While adventure, mental fortitude and the mindset to take on incredible challenges really inspire and motivate me to attempt to capture what I can, I also love documenting and sharing stories of culture and life experiences. In very simple terms, I am inspired to share stories which resonate with me and that I feel can inspire and/or motivate others. To share these stories as authentically as I can, that is what really keeps me going.
